National Affairs
  • Nation observed Hindi Diwas on 14th September, 2014. Hindi Diwas (Hindi Day) is celebrated on 14th September, because on this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India had adopted Hindi written in Devnagari script as the Official Language of the Union. It is the language spoken as a mother tongue by around 258 million people. It is known as the 4th Largest Language of the World.
  • India his out at Pakistan over its remakes that Hafiz Saeed has no case against him, saying he was the "Evil" mastermind behind the Mumbai attacks and it was up to Pakistan to bring the chief of terror outfit Jamat-Ud-Dawa (JuD) to book and deliver justice.

  • The Government approved launching of National Ayush Mission (NAM) to address gaps in health services in vulnerable and far-flung area of the country.
International Affairs
  • Queen Elizabeth II has made her first comments about this week's Scottish independence vote, urging Scots to "think very carefully about the future".
  • India is looking to enhance cooperation with Vietnam in defense, security and political arena as there is immense potential for bilateral engagement between the two nations, President Pranab Mukherjee said.
  • The United Nations announced that it has withdrawn its peacekeepers from many positions on the Golan Heights because of escalating fighting in the war between Syrian Government forces and opposition fighters.
Indian President's Vietnam Visit Highlights Affairs
  • Highlights of his Visit:-
    • President Pranab Mukherjee in 4 Day visit to Vietnam.
    • Mukherjee was received by Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of President's Office Dao Viet Trung.
    • He held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Truong Tan Sang at Hanoi.
    • A Sapling of the holy Bodhi tree from Bodh Gaya in Bihar, which was carried by the President, was planted in Hanoi.
  • India and Vietnam ink 7 Pacts including one in the crucial oil cooperation sector and another on air services.
    • Highlights of the Pacts signed by India and Vietnam:-
      • The air services agreement was between Jet Airways and Air Vietnam.
      • OVL, the overseas arm of oil major ONGC and Petro Vietnam inked an agreement on exploring two additional blocks off Vietnam.
      • India will also be extending a line of credit to Vietnam.

  • After more than two years of touching down on Mars, NASA's curiosity rover has finally reached the foothills of Mount Sharp, the primary destination it was designed to explore.

  • Marking the twentieth anniversary of the controversial novel Lajja, a fresh English translation of the Bengali work by feminist author Taslima Nasreenn has now been published.

  • Inflation data based on wholesale price index (WPI) for August hit a five year low at 3.74 percent declining vegetable prices and other food articles. August WPI inflation stood at 5.19 percent in July.
