International Affairs
  • India formally submitted an application for full membership to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) at the SCO heads of State Summit in Tajikistan Capital Dushanbe.
    • Pakistan and Iran have already submitted their applications to join it.
    • Our country has a very good chance of being inducted into Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) along with Pakistan, a development which will strengthen anti-terrorism campaign in the region.
    • Other members of SCO :- Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
    • Observers :- Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan.
    • Dialogue Partners :- Belarus, Turkey and Sri Lanka.
  • Connie Hedegaard, Commissioner for Climate Action, European Commission stated that the world should look to a new climate treaty which is binding but also reflect the ground realities. The new treaty could have a differentiated approach to different emerging economies, he added.
  • In an exceptional departure from tradition, Prime Minister Modi will greet visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping not in Delhi, but in Ahmedabad when he arrives on 17th September, 2014.
  • World First-Aid Day observed today (13th September, 2014) to raise awareness on how first aid can save lives during crisis.
